Beware of Scam Artists Posing as Utility Workers
Posted on 03/26/2009

Perth Amboy Police are issuing a warning after scam artists posing as utility workers have preyed on elderly residents in Perth Amboy as well as in surrounding towns.

Suspects knock on the door of the intended victim and pose as water department employees to gain access to the home. They pretend they have to check the water pressure and take the victim to the basement. Once the victim is distracted, a second person enters and burglarizes the house.

The Perth Amboy Water Department (732-826-5335) and Middlesex Water (732-634-1500) both service the City of Perth Amboy. If a worker must enter a resident's house, their policy is to make an appointment first. They will not go to your house unannounced. All utility workers have a picture ID and must produce it when asked. Also be aware that their clothes should have a company logo and they should have a utility truck. You may call the above numbers to verify their identity.

WHAT TO DO: If they do not have an ID or you are unsure if an ID or a person is legitimate, do NOT allow them in your house and contact the police at 732-442-4400.

We urge all residents to help the police protect the elderly by being especially vigilant in the upcoming warm weather, as more people tend to be in yards and doors are kept unlocked.
