Perth Amboy Honors Legacy with Mural Unveiling
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PERTH AMBOY – August 30, 2024: The City of Perth Amboy recently unveiled a new mural titled "Eternal Bonds: Stories of Love and Legacy" at the Richard F. Stack Apartments. This vibrant artwork serves as a tribute to the city’s senior community, capturing the deep family traditions and enduring connections that have long defined Perth Amboy.
The project, funded through a grant from AARP's Community Challenge initiative, encourages community connections and cultural appreciation. It showcases a successful collaboration between the city leadership, AARP, and residents, reinforcing unity and pride in Perth Amboy.
“From the very start, this project has been a true collaboration shaped by the ideas and heartfelt suggestions each of you shared with us,” said Mayor Helmin Caba. “Your voices truly mattered, and today, as we stand before this beautiful mural, we see your vision fully realized.”
Douglas G. Dzema, Executive Director of the Housing Authority and PARTNER, Donato Nieman, AARP New Jersey Volunteer President, and Marietou Biteye, the mural's artist, each shared their thoughts on the significance of the artwork and its impact on the greater community.
Artist Marietou Biteye, who grew up and resides in Perth Amboy, explained that the mural encapsulates all generations of residents, highlighting key moments like weddings, graduations, and centenarian birthdays, with cultural references interwoven throughout.
“I wanted to give the seniors a bright, inviting space that celebrates where they came from and where they are now,” Biteye said. “The mural focuses on the importance of family, cultural inclusivity, and carrying on different traditions.”
The celebration also featured a mock Sip and Paint session led by local artist Julisa Mujica, inviting attendees to engage with the mural’s themes in a fun and interactive way.
