New statewide rules for e-bikes and e-scooters are coming to New Jersey. Riders should review the requirements now and be ready before July 19, 2026.
These changes are intended to improve safety, help riders understand the new statewide requirements, and support responsible riding in our community.

What Riders May Need to Do by July 19, 2026
- Register your e-bike or e-scooter with NJMVC, if required.
- Get the required license or permit through NJMVC, if required.
- Obtain required insurance, if required.
- Follow all traffic and safety laws.
Rules Already in Effect
- Riders must be at least 15 years old.
- Riders must follow all traffic and safety laws.
- Modification kits that increase speed beyond legal limits are prohibited.
- There is a temporary restriction on online sales of certain high-speed e-bikes, also known as e-motos.
Ride Safe
- Wear a helmet.
- Stay aware of traffic.
- Ride responsibly in public spaces.
- Use extra caution near schools, parks, intersections, and busy pedestrian areas.
