Firearms Application Information

This page provides complete information on how to apply for a firearms permit in the City of Perth Amboy, including instructions for application, fingerprinting, and payment.

Step 1: Apply Online via NJ State Police FARS

All applications must be submitted through the NJ State Police Firearms Application & Registration System (FARS):

ORI Number for Perth Amboy PD: NJ0121600

Include two (2) references with valid email addresses. Errors or false information may delay or disqualify your application under N.J.S. 2C:39-10c.

Step 2: Schedule Fingerprinting

First-time applicants must be fingerprinted through IdentoGO within 90 days of submitting the application. You will receive instructions in your confirmation email. If you have previously been fingerprinted, your SBI# can be reused.

Schedule Fingerprinting at IdentoGO

Step 3: Pay Required Fees

After completing your application, you must pay the applicable fees via the City of Perth Amboy SDL Portal:

  • $25 per handgun permit (you may select multiple permits)
  • $50 Initial Firearm ID Card
  • $150 Carry Permit

Note: There is no fee for a duplicate Firearms ID Card for address changes or replacement. However, if you apply for handgun permits on the same application, the $25 fee still applies per permit.

These fees are set by NJ Statute and not by the City of Perth Amboy.

Submit Payment via SDL Portal

Concealed Carry Permits

Initial and renewal carry permits are submitted online through the NJ FARS system. Renewals may be submitted up to four (4) months before expiration. Fingerprints are not required for renewal if your original set is already on file, but range qualifications must be within the past two years.

Permit Rules & Validity

  • Only one handgun can be purchased every 30 days (N.J.S. 2C:58-3i).
  • Permits are valid for 180 days from approval.
  • Permits that expire cannot be extended — you must reapply.
